When you live in an area that sees tornados, preparation is essential in order to stay safe. Storm shelter installation on your property is a great way to weather the storm in a protected space. Since an underground shelter is designed for emergency use, here are a few maintenance recommendations to ensure the area is ready in your time of need.

4 Storm Shelter Maintenance Tips

1. Clean Frequently

Underground storm shelters are typically built out of durable and resilient concrete and sealed with a vertically reinforced steel door. This contained space does live outdoors on your property, making it susceptible to the elements. While the hope is little to no time spent in this structure, make a habit of visiting your storm shelter once a month to clean the interior.

Dusting, sweeping, and wiping down the inside will ensure comfort when you need to take cover. Refrain from using your shelter as an auxiliary storage solution and keep any supplies housed within tidy.

2. Check the Entrance

When a tornado siren rings, you and your family should make your way to the storm shelter as quickly as possible. To ensure this transition is highly effective, landscape the area surrounding your shelter entrance. Make sure the door is free and clear of obstructions.

Test the door and latching mechanisms on a regular basis, so you know they'll function properly. Lubricate handles and hinges as needed.

3. Maintain Proper Ventilation

Bugs and other small critters may try and nest inside your storm shelter, particularly during extreme weather seasons. Spraying for insects is a common need to keep your shelter inviting and your stockpile safe.

That being said, make sure your shelter has proper ventilation, so you're not exposed to these harsh chemicals. Ventilation and airing out your storm shelter on occasion by keeping the doors open for a few hours can eliminate musty odors and moisture.

4. Take Inventory

During a storm, you may need to spend an extended period of time in your shelter. For your comfort and convenience, having supplies stored inside is highly recommended. Your emergency kit should include bottled water, nonperishable food items, battery-powered flashlights, a first aid kit, blankets and spare clothing to keep warm, and a few activities such as board games or playing cards to pass the time. On a seasonal basis, check your inventory to make sure everything is in good condition and that your food items have not expired.
