Hawaii is one of the largest producers of coffee beans in the United States, as the warm weather and fertile, volcanic soil provide a hospitable, unique environment for growing. As such, there are several types of beans that are exclusively grown in the state. Whether you're a local or simply visiting for vacation, learning about and sampling some of the delicious brews can help expand your horizons. Below are several varieties to try.

What Are Some Local Types of Coffee in Hawaii?

1. Kona

This type of coffee is famous across the United States, and it is grown exclusively on the big island. Kona beans account for half of the total crop in the state, which is why they are commonly exported. These beans are famous for having a sweet, fruity taste and a hypnotizing aroma. If you love strong, robust java, drinking this coffee by itself is the best choice. However, many locals prefer to mix the beans with other varieties to cut the strength, as this gives it a lighter, more pleasant flavor.

2. Kauai

On the island of Kauai, a large sugar cane plantation was converted in 1987 to begin growing coffee beans. This makes it the largest farm for the beans in the United States. While the beans grown are Arabica, the growing conditions of Hawaii give the resulting drink a unique flavor and smell. This coffee has become an increasingly popular blend because it has a medium-bodied roast and light floral notes. This makes it perfect for people who are new to drinking coffee and want to experience diverse flavors.

3. Waialua

Between the towns of Wahiawa and Waialua on Oahu, the Waialua estate grows Arabia Typica beans on former sugar cane land. Unlike other farms, this one sits above sea level. The change in elevation and atmosphere contributes to unique growing conditions, giving the plants plenty of fresh, moist air. The farm has about 160 acres of beans and a 20-acre cacao orchard, and this brew is a favorite among locals because of it's medium-bodied roast and lingering aftertaste. It also has hints of chocolate with each sip.
