When a friend, colleague, or neighbor suffers a loss, your initial instinct will be to express sympathy. Condolences should always be mindful and empathetic, given the sensitivity surrounding funeral services. Below is a guide to giving condolences so you're prepared when you go to a burial service or memorial at a funeral home.

What Should You Say?

The traditional way to offer condolences is by writing a sympathy card. The message doesn't need to be a long paragraph. Instead, a brief and heartfelt message is best. Express your condolences and let the loved one know you're thinking about them.

If you have a treasured memory or a kind word to say about the individual who has passed, including a sentence or two about how much the person meant to you can be quite comforting. Quotes, poetry, or religious passages meant to express support, peace, or celebrate life are also acceptable.

What Messages Should Be Avoided?

Steer clear of addressing the circumstances of the passing, especially in the early days. While your friend or family member is planning a funeral service, they may not want to hear that the situation is for the best or their loved one is in a better place.

Refrain from saying you know their pain firsthand and steer clear of providing unsolicited advice. Instead of statements such as “You should” or “You will,” simply send them messages of support.

How Can You Offer Help?

After sending a sympathy card, stay in touch with your loved one. Attend the funeral service and show you care by offering help, whether it be bringing them a home-cooked meal or helping with errands. Other tokens of sympathy such as floral arrangements, a donation in the deceased's honor, fresh baked goods, or groceries for the family will be greatly appreciated.
