Family dentists recommend scheduling your child’s first visit after their first birthday or when their first tooth comes in, whichever comes first. The initial visit does not last long, typically consisting of a quick assessment of the child’s mouth to look for bite issues and other potential dental problems. And while your little one probably will not remember the visit, they will remember subsequent dental exams and teeth cleanings. Help your three- or four-year-old prepare for their checkup with these tips.

3 Ways to Help Your Child Prepare for the Family Dentist

1. Discuss the Visit

Go over the upcoming visit and make it clear that you will be there the whole time and that the dental professionals remove “sugar bugs” from your child’s teeth to help them enjoy a healthy smile. Talk about sitting in the dental chair, asking the dentist questions, and receiving a free toothbrush and toy once the visit is over. Using “sugar bugs," "super-fast toothbrush (drill)," and other kid-friendly language makes dental services more relatable, while mentioning free toys helps them look forward to the session.

2. Read Books About the Subject

Pick from the many books about first-time family dentist visits and give them plenty of options to choose from and read in the days leading up to the appointment. Answer any questions your child has and use the pictures to give the little one an idea of what the waiting room and dental chair look like. Seeing images prior to the visit makes these dental practice features less intimidating.

3. Utilize Plush Toys

Put on plays with plush toys to help your child prepare. There are many dental-themed stuffed toys available, including those with big, toothy grins and attached toothbrushes. Practice brushing and examining the toy’s teeth to reinforce what will happen at the appointment. Tell your child that if they want to bring the toy with them for the dental professional to “examine,” they can, which can increase the young one’s comfort level.
