Whether reading the back of a tube of toothpaste or during a visit to your dentist, you’ve probably heard the terms “tartar” and “plaque.” Although these words are often used interchangeably, they each describe very different, albeit related, dental issues. To learn more about how they differ and how they can affect you, take a look at the helpful article below.

Plaque

Dental plaque is a soft, sticky substance that forms when traces of food blend with saliva. It contains hundreds of different species of bacteria and some species of fungi. Many of these bacteria use plaque and food particles as a food source, after which they emit acidic byproducts. These acids then erode and weaken the protective outer layer of a tooth, increasing the risk of decay and cavities.

The only reliable way to minimize plaque buildup is by brushing twice and flossing once a day. Using mouthwash and drinking water or chewing sugar-free gum after eating will also help. During a routine cleaning, a dentist will scrape away any residual plaque in hard-to-reach areas, such as between the back teeth.

Tartar

Unless it’s removed promptly and regularly, plaque will harden, mix with minerals in saliva, and turn into tartar over time. Also called calculus, this substance will coat the exterior of your teeth, increasing the risk of gum disease and other oral infections if it spreads below the gumline.

Only a dentist can remove tartar using a specialized scraping tool called a scaler. You can reduce your risk of tartar by scheduling regular dental cleanings, brushing and flossing regularly, and avoiding sugary foods and tobacco.
