The driveway plays a significant role in your home's appearance and functionality. Unfortunately, winter weather can take a toll on the asphalt, resulting in considerable damage that will require extensive repairs or a replacement. Fortunately, you can prevent this issue by taking the following precautions this season.

Do:

Remove snow and ice.

Temperature fluctuations can cause snow to melt, then refreeze. This creates a slippery surface, and when melted snow gets into the asphalt and expands and contracts during the freeze-thaw cycle, it can cause cracks. Promptly clearing snow off the driveway not only makes it easier and safer for your family to come and go, but it also protects the asphalt from this damage.

Use a plastic snow shovel.

To prevent scraping and gouging your asphalt driveway, it's best to use a plastic shovel for snow removal. Metal snow shovels have a sharp edge that can cause damage.

Avoid holding the shovel at a steep angle or digging into the asphalt when shoveling. Instead, hold the shovel at a shallow angle and remove small amounts of snow at a time to protect the driveway surface.

Don't:

Use salt as a de-icer.

Rock salt is corrosive and can leave the asphalt vulnerable to cracks. The product is also toxic and can damage landscaping near the driveway. To prevent icy patches on your driveway, use a non-damaging de-icer like kitty litter, sand, or magnesium chloride instead.

Use spiked snow tires.

Putting spiked tires on your vehicle can provide additional traction when you're driving in treacherous conditions, but the spikes can also cause extensive damage to your driveway. Even if you've had the asphalt seal coated for protection, spiked tires can put holes in the material, allowing water to permeate the surface. Instead, invest in high-quality snow tires with deep treads for safe driving.
