Whether you’re upgrading a driveway or transforming a parking lot that’s seen better days, asphalt paving will make your property feel and look like new. When performed by experienced, licensed contractors, this project includes several steps that ensure the stability of the surface. To help prepare you for your upcoming appointment, here are some steps to expect from it.

4 Stages of Asphalt Paving

1. Inspecting & Grading

Before the paving can take place, contractors will analyze your plans for the project to determine how they’ll apply the pavement material.

After this, they will shave the stone base to the proper dimensions. Contractors grade the surface using special equipment to ensure reliable drainage channels are in place. They’ll take into consideration the slope of the land, since pooling water could lead to cracks and potholes in asphalt

2. Installing the Sub Base

Once the land is even, they’ll install a sub base to support the asphalt. This component will help safeguard against damage during the natural expansion and contracting movements that the material experiences during the winter freezing and thawing cycles.

3. Applying the Asphalt

Using paving and grading equipment, they compact and smooth out the pavement to ensure even distribution and an appealing finish. They will pay close attention to the butt joint areas, which are the spots where new and old asphalt meet.

4. Completing the Final Inspection

After rolling trucks have evened out the new surface, contractors will walk around the area looking for any small stone or aggregate bumps. They may smooth these by hand or use machinery for larger spaces.

Once you’ve approved of the look, your area will be ready for use in around 24 hours. Keep in mind that asphalt may need up to a year to fully cure.
