Cars and trucks rely on motor oil and lubricants to dissipate drivetrain heat and reduce friction between moving parts. They are essential to vehicle longevity and should be replaced regularly to ensure proper performance. Because the engine is so vital and expensive to repair, engine oil is particularly important. Here are some key types of oil and how to select between them.

What Are the Most Common Types of Motor Oil and Lubricants?

1. Conventional Oil

Conventional engine oil is a natural petroleum product pumped from the ground and derived from decayed organic matter. It is the oldest and most common type. It's affordable and available. You can find it at any auto parts or hardware store in various brands, viscosities, and quality levels. It flows more slowly than synthetic, so it is the best choice for older, higher mileage engines—those with more than 75,000 miles on the odometer that are susceptible to wear on their inner gears. However, as a natural product, some of its molecules provide exceptional lubrication, while others do not. These may instead break down easily and affect its viscosity, or thickness, so it should be changed every 3,000 miles or so.

2. Synthetic Oil

Synthetic oils are chemically produced to eliminate molecules that might break down, so they are engineered to provide maximum lubrication and minimum friction. They also last a long time without losing viscosity. Nevertheless, you should change synthetic oil at least once a year or every 5,000 miles to get rid of any accumulated moisture or metal fragments. Other advantages include greater engine torque and horsepower, lower drag, and a longer average engine life span. Lastly, they work better in extremely high or low temperature environments.

3. Blends

Synthetic blends are a mixture of conventional and synthetic oils. As with conventional brands, these types are great for older engines, but they offer many of the benefits of full synthetics, as well. For instance, they provide longer-lasting lubrication, so they increase the mileage between oil changes. They also offer better protection against cold weather and oxidation and many brands contain detergents and additives to clean the engine and control the formation of sludge. Finally, they cost a bit more than conventional brands, but far less than full synthetics.
