On the tube are indicators “F,” “3/4,” “1/2,” and “1/4,” etched from the top to the bottom of the tub. The closer to “F” the yellow floater is, the fuller the tank is. When close to the bottom, or when the float is no longer visible, the sooner you’ll need a refill.

It's wise to also test the gauge regularly to ensure it’s working. Remove the clear tube and press down on the yellow float. If it moves back into position, the tank is working correctly. If not, you’ll need a professional inspection. This is crucial so you have an accurate idea of how much heating oil you have.

When to Refill Your Tank

As a rule of thumb, a 2,000 sq. ft. home will use 1/4 of a tank of heating oil in a week. You may use more or less depending on how cold it is outside, how well your home insulation holds heat in, and how efficient the oil furnace is.
