You may not have much need for heating oil during the summer, but that doesn’t mean you should ignore your tank entirely. Without proper care, your tank could face maintenance issues when the time comes to use it again. Here is a closer look at what you need to do to protect your heating oil tank during the summer.

How to Protect Your Heating Oil Tank

1. Keep It Full

Letting the heating oil tank go empty during the summer is an invitation for trouble, especially in high-humidity areas. Condensation will readily form in the empty areas inside your tank, spurred by the contrast between hot, humid daytime conditions and cooler nighttime weather. A tank that is kept outside or above ground is at an even greater risk. The dripping water can lead to bacterial and sludge growth, which will eventually clog the fuel lines and corrode the tank. Keeping the tank at least half full will prevent this buildup from occurring.

2. Provide Proper Ventilation

3. Inspect the Tank’s Exterior

Because your heating oil tank doesn’t get much use during the summer, it’s an ideal time to have a technician inspect it for cracks, leaks, and other maintenance concerns. Getting a technician to inspect your equipment during the offseason will allow you to address any needed repairs before you need to heat your home. You don’t want to discover that your equipment has a dangerous leak when you first turn it on during the winter.
