As we enter fall, some motorists have to say goodbye to long drives on the open road. Unlike cars, motorcycles aren’t equipped for the icy streets, and the cold wind whipping past doesn’t feel comfortable. While you might be ready to put your motorcycle in the garage for the winter, you’ll have a few tasks to complete before it’s ready for storage. Use the following guide to winterize your favorite vehicle so it’s in pristine condition when the weather warms up.

3 Tips for Winterizing Your Motorcycle

1. Refill the Fluids

Purchase the manufacturer-recommended coolant, clutch, and brake fluids, and top of all of your motorcycle’s fluids. It’s also a smart idea to lubricate all necessary parts, such as the throttle and shifter. Change the oil in your motorcycle as well before throwing the cover on it until spring.

2. Tend to the Battery

motorcyclesThere are two possible ways to take care of your battery through the winter. If you leave it in your bike all season without attending to it, devices like a clock or radio will gradually drain it until it’s dead. To avoid this, either store your bike with a full battery or remove the battery and hook it up to a trickle charger.

3. Find the Right Home

Just because the cooler months tend to feel less sunny, it doesn’t mean UV rays are no longer a threat to your vehicle. To avoid sun damage, cover your bike and store it in a dark area safe from the elements. If you’re keeping it in a garage, don’t store it next to plumbing fixtures such as your water heater. Also, choose a cover that’s soft on the inside but thick enough to prevent dings and scratches.
