3 Winter Trails in Pennsylvania to Explore on Your ATV
Due to the compact size and turning radius, ATVs can navigate tight areas better than cars. That’s why nature enthusiasts in Pennsylvania use their all-terrain vehicles to explore the state’s many snow-covered trails during the winter. Whether you’re a Keystone State native or a visitor, here are three trails you shouldn’t miss this season.
3 Pennsylvania Trails ATV Riders Enjoy in Winter
1. Burnt Mills
Burnt Mills is part of the Delaware State Forest in Pike County. Those with registered Class II ATVs can explore the seven-mile stretch of trails during summer and winter. With wide turnaround areas, the paths can accommodate vehicles with a width of 58 inches or fewer. The ground is compact and flat, making Burnt Mills the perfect place for beginners. Open from mid-December to April 1, the trails are located just one mile south of Porters Lake, with access from the parking area on Route 402.
2. Whiskey Springs
Located in the Sproul State Forest in Clinton County, the Whiskey Springs ATV Trail System features 50 miles of meandering paths. The trails are open to summer and winter riders with registered Class II ATVs fewer than 64 inches wide. Riders travel over loose dirt in most areas, with the opportunity to see stripped mines along the way. The winter season is from mid-January to April 1.
3. Bloody Skillet
Located on an old coal mining site, Bloody Skillet gets its name from a slaughterhouse that once stood in the area. During the winter season, from mid-January to April 1, ATV riders can travel over 39 miles of hard-packed roads as well as bridge and shallow creek crossings in the forest. Class II vehicles must be registered and less than 64 inches wide.
