Visiting your dentist twice a year for a dental cleaning will remove particles that accumulate and eventually develop into cavities and tartar. If your child has never gone through this procedure, they may have a few concerns about it. As a parent, understanding what’s involved in the process will help you explain it to your little one and appease their fears. To help you prepare them for the appointment, here is more information about what goes into dental cleanings.

3 Steps to the Dental Cleaning Process

1. Removing Plaque & Tartar Buildup

The hygienist will use a variety of tools to remove plaque and the tougher tartar buildup on all teeth. These tend to accumulate between the teeth and along the gum line. The patient will lay back with their mouth open while the dentist uses a scaler and small mirror to remove these substances. Your little one may hear and feel some scraping as they pull the buildup off, but there will be no pain. The dentist will occasionally rinse as they work and use a suction device to pull saliva out of the mouth so they can see what they’re doing.

2. Hand Flossing

During this time, they may give technique tips or point out certain spots that need special attention. This will ensure your child knows how best to remove food particles at home to avoid plaque buildup.

3. Fluoride Treatment

This treatment involves applying fluoride to the teeth in the form of a gel, paste, or polish. Fluoride strengthens the enamel and creates a protective layer on its surface to prevent cavities. The product will be left on for a minute or two to sink in. Afterward, the child can spit it out and rinse their mouth to remove any lingering flavor.
