Obstetrics and gynecology are two branches of women’s health care that are often grouped together. Yet, there are key differences in these specialties, and understanding them is important to ensure you receive the type of care you need. Here’s a closer look at what separates an obstetrician from a gynecologist and how some doctors can be both.

Obstetrics

An obstetrician specializes in all aspects of pregnancy. This includes care before conception, during pregnancy and childbirth, and after delivery. These specialists provide support to promote the health of the mother and her baby. They’re also trained to treat pregnancy complications, including placenta issues, preeclampsia, and delivery via Cesarean section. Physicians who specialize exclusively in obstetrics do not provide care beyond pregnancy.

Gynecology

Gynecologists focus on reproductive care for women from their first period through menopause. They treat many conditions that affect the female reproductive system, including irregular menstruation, endometriosis, certain types of cancer, cysts, and infections. These doctors also perform preventive care, including breast exams, Pap smears, and pelvic exams, as well as administration of human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccines. Gynecologists who are not also obstetricians do not treat patients during pregnancy.

OB-GYNs

OB-GYNs are both obstetricians and gynecologists. Because medical school residencies provide a wide range of training, future OB-GYNs may choose to specialize in one or both fields. For example, residents learn about ultrasounds, infertility, reproductive endocrinology, gynecologic surgery, and all forms and stages of pregnancy care. For this reason, it’s possible to have a doctor who is an OB-GYN, and thus a specialist in both fields.
