Impacted wisdom teeth are problematic, since they typically put pressure on your second molars and can experience decay that results in painful infections. If you recently underwent wisdom teeth removal or will soon, the right aftercare helps you heal quickly without complications. Below are tips for healthy aftercare.

4 Oral Care Tips After Wisdom Teeth Removal

1. Use Gauze to Reduce Bleeding

Mild bleeding is normal following wisdom teeth extractions. To staunch bleeding and help the tooth gap form a blood clot, bite down on clean gauze for about 30 minutes. Do not chew on the gauze, as this triggers saliva flow that prevents a clot from forming. If you have clotting issues, bite down on a tea bag. Tannic acid in tea constricts blood vessels to assist clot formation.

2. Avoid Vigorous Mouth Rinsing

Rinsing your mouth aggressively with water or a salt rinse can dislodge the clot. Avoid this practice and wait 24 hours to gently rinse your mouth with saltwater. This prevents bacteria from accumulating in your mouth and possibly causing infections. Follow your dentist’s directions regarding how many times a day to rinse, which is usually five to six times, and do not brush or floss until your dentist says you can. When you brush and floss, avoid the affected area.

3. Consume Soft Foods

A soft food diet avoids dislodging the clot and causing pain. Recommended soft foods include yogurt, applesauce, pudding, lukewarm soups and broths, mashed beans, soft cheeses, and pureed fruits and vegetables. Your dentist might recommend a liquid diet for one to two days in light of inflammation.

4. Relieve Discomfort With Cold Compresses & Pain Meds

Pain and inflammation after wisdom teeth removal are generally manageable with cold compresses and OTC pain medication. Use these products as prescribed by your dentist, such as using the cold compress for “20 minutes on, 20 minutes off,” and focus on resting. You should take at least three days to rest and recover from your procedure, which includes avoiding exercise and keeping your head elevated to minimize swelling.
