If you want to learn more about the Bible, or you would like to study the Holy Book alongside your family, you may not know how to get started. Thankfully, home Bible study is approachable and rewarding even if you don't have previous teaching experience. Here's how to make the most of worship time with your family.

How to Enjoy Bible Study With Your Family

1. Set a Time and Place

Setting a consistent routine is important, so figure out what works best for your family and stick to it. Having a designated time and space helps you stay focused on the task at hand without distractions, which is important for really diving deep into the Bible. This is especially important if you are studying with children, as consistency can help their focus.

2. Choose Your Translation

Even though some translations may be more accurate than others, understanding the text is key to effective Bible study. The most common translations are the New International Version (NIV) and the English Standard Version (ESV), while many Baptist churches use the NIV, King James (KJV), New King James (NKJV), or the New Living Translation (NLT). Which you use is up to you and your church leaders.

3. Focus on Key Verses

Memorize key verses that stand out to you or that strengthen your faith in God. This will help you recall Scripture when needed and serve as reminders of God's promises throughout the day. For example, Psalm 23:4 says, “Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.” This means that no matter what happens in our lives, God will always be there with us.

4. Encourage Questions

If you don't understand something, don’t be afraid to ask questions of your church leaders, then take their answers back to be shared with your family. This is a great way for everyone to learn and grow together. Encourage your children to ask questions as well, as it shows that they are actively engaged in Bible study.

5. Pray Together

Pray before and after your Bible study session. Asking God for guidance in understanding His word will help you gain more from the study time, and thanking Him afterwards shows appreciation for what He has taught you. Remembering to spend time in prayer together as a family will help strengthen your study sessions.
