When it comes to liquor, vodka is a certified hit among people all over the globe. Although it’s the basis for so many classic cocktails, including Bloody Marys, Martinis, Screwdrivers, and more, it hasn’t always been the staple it is today. Here’s how this potent spirit went from obscurity to one of America’s favorite liquors.

Origins

Vodka has a long and storied history, stemming all the way back to the 12th century. The liquor, which is believed to have originated in northeastern Europe, was distilled using rye and chiefly used for medicinal applications.

However, it’s intoxicating benefits were soon discovered, as well as its ability to make the often blistering conditions in the region feel a lot less uncomfortable. The distilling process eventually switched from rye to potatoes, which were a lot more plentiful at the time.

How It Became Popular in America

liquorWhile vodka is not American born, it’s still one of the most beloved liquors throughout the nation. It was first noticed by Americans in the 1800s, as more people aimed to have an international palate for food and drink.

Travel writers of the day often talked about Russia, which seemed mysterious and exotic to the average person. These articles also touched on vodka and its popularity among Russian drinkers.

The later influx of immigrants, many of whom were from the same regions where vodka originated, spread the word even more. The drink that really cemented vodka’s place in the hearts of Americans was the Moscow Mule, made with vodka and ginger beer and conveniently served in a mug. The liquor continued its upward trajectory with the iconic movie character James Bond ordering vodka martinis in the franchise’s films.
