February 28 marks National Tooth Fairy Day, making it a wonderful opportunity to teach your kids about dental care. Instilling good brushing and flossing habits in your children will help them develop healthy teeth and gums and a beautiful smile that can last a lifetime. Find out how you can use the mythical Tooth Fairy to teach kids about oral health and hygiene.

The Tooth Fairy's Origins

The Tooth Fairy as we know her today was first mentioned in 1927, in a short play written for children. The Tooth Fairy has predecessors, however. Before this, many cultures had developed tales of creatures, usually a small mouse or rat, that would take children's old teeth and leave money or another gift in exchange.

French folktales from the 17th century mention La Petite Souris (the little mouse) while Spanish-speaking cultures have Ratóncito Pérez. The American Tooth Fairy seems to be a combination of these types of figures and the stereotypical "good fairy" persona.

How to Celebrate National Tooth Fairy Day

Celebrate National Tooth Fairy Day by getting crafty. You and your child can make a DIY tooth fairy pillow. Cut felt fabric into 4x4" squares and sew them together on three sides. Add stuffing and then sew up the last side. Finally, stitch a small pocket to the front of the pillow: This is where the tooth and money go. You can also have your little one draw pictures of what they think the Tooth Fairy looks like.

Conclude your day of creativity by relaxing with a movie. Enjoy some healthy snacks, like fresh vegetable sticks with hummus, while you watch. Take the opportunity to explain to your child how a healthy diet can create a beautiful smile, while sugar-laden foods like candy can attract bacteria that can cause cavities and damage teeth.

After your movie night, floss and brush with your child, further explaining how these habits help get rid of those bad bacteria. You can also download a dental care app or game to make tooth brushing more fun.

Following your educational National Tooth Fairy Day, take your child to Stacy Lesley DDS of Concord, NC, for a teeth cleaning. Their dental team can explain the importance of regular dentist visits to your child and talk them through the procedure, ensuring they aren't afraid. Visit their website or call (704) 766-1488 to schedule your child's appointment.
