Finding spots of discoloration on your child’s teeth can be alarming, but it doesn’t always indicate a serious dental issue. In some cases, a harmless factor known as chromogenic bacteria may lead to spots on baby teeth. While it’s still a good idea to see a dentist to receive a formal diagnosis, here’s what you should know about this common dental occurrence.
What Are the Types of Chromogenic Bacteria Stains?
Stains caused by chromogenic bacteria can manifest in several different ways. One is a dark black tooth stain, but it’s also possible for the discoloration to be green, orange, or blue. The discoloration appears in lines or dots. While the issue is most common in children, rarely, it may also occur in adults.
How Do They Develop?
Chromogenic bacteria have been observed more frequently in youths with poor oral hygiene. Yet, the correlation isn’t necessarily the cause; many dentists have also noticed the bacteria in children with strong dental care habits.
Researchers who have studied the black film have discovered it’s a form of bacterial plaque comprised of a ferric compound. The black bacteria appear to be more likely to develop in children whose diets have a high mineral content, including iron and calcium. Yet, when the stains are green or accompanied by a film, they are most likely due to poor hygiene.
How Are They Treated & Prevented?
Fortunately, chromogenic bacteria in itself isn’t a risk factor for cavities or other dental complications. It can be a source of embarrassment for children, however, and should therefore be treated by a dentist. While the stains can’t be removed at home, dental professionals have the proper tools to eliminate them thoroughly in their office. They can gently remove the stains from the enamel’s surface using a tool known as a scaler, and then polish the teeth with a professional-grade paste.
Aside from the poor oral hygiene that contributes to certain types of chromogenic bacteria, it’s still not entirely clear why some children develop the black stains and others do not. Avoiding excess iron in your child’s diet may help to prevent the issue. With that in mind, be sure to discuss any dietary changes with their pediatrician first.
