Producing picture-perfect smiles is a common goal in cosmetic dentistry. One of the more popular options is veneers, which cover up the gaps and preserve the health of your bite. However, for those who aren’t familiar with the basics, it can be difficult to determine whether they’re right for you. Take a closer look at the following to better understand the benefits of such a procedure.

What Are Dental Veneers?

Dental veneers are made from either porcelain or resin. This ensures a durability that can withstand the force of the bite without risking damage. They are custom-made to fit the mouth and provide coverage for a variety of issues, including unsightly stains, chips and crooked teeth.

Porcelain veneers will require the dentist to remove a small amount of enamel in order to prepare the surface for adhesion. Once the veneer is in place, it cannot be removed. Resin veneers, on the other hand, can sit directly on the tooth with minimal adjustments and are fairly easy to replace.

What Should You Expect From This Procedure?

The dentist will first discuss the number of veneers they are going to adhere. X-rays may be required to ensure that there’s no hidden decay and a mold will be taken of your teeth. The lab can then use this to create a custom fit.

It should only take a few hours for the anesthetic to wear off after the procedure. During this time, be careful not to eat or drink anything hot to prevent burning yourself. The materials should be able to sustain regular use toward the end of the day.

Certain precautions can help to extend their life span. For example, using scissors to open packaging instead of your teeth will avoid accidentally loosening the veneers. Secure a mouth guard for nighttime to protect against grinding or clenching your teeth.
