Tennis is a challenging sport that helps improve coordination, strength, and cardiovascular health. When you begin a course in tennis instruction, you’ll learn not only athletic skills but also how games are scored. Here’s how players score points in tennis.
Points
Tennis is scored using a unique point system. A score of zero in tennis is love. Starting at love, players earn points in increments. One point equals 15, two points equal 30, three points equal 40, and four points is game.
To win a game, a player must accumulate four points and win by two. If the score is 40 to love, for example, the player at 40 wins the game if they win the next point.
A program of tennis instruction will teach you some additional scoring lingo as well. A tie score in tennis is dubbed “all.” If both players are at 30, the score is 30-all. A 40-40 tie is “deuce.” The next player to win a point has the advantage and needs only one more point to win the game.
Sets
Tennis is played in sets of six games. There are two approaches. In a so-called “advantage set,” the first player to win six games with a two-game lead takes the set. If one player has won five games and the other one has won three, the player in the lead needs to win one more game to capture the set. However, if both players have each won six games, they continue play until one pulls ahead by two games.
In a “tiebreak set,” the first player to win a game after a six-to-six tie is reached takes the set.
Match
In most tennis matches, the first player to win two of three sets takes the match.
