As the nation makes significant strides in administering COVID-19 vaccines, controlling outbreaks, and revising restrictions, many people are understandably anxious to get back to their favorite gym or health club. But it's no secret that the post-pandemic world will look a bit different, at least for a while, and it's up to every individual to continue to engage in safety best practices. Below, discover a few tips for safely returning to your gym or health club.

How to Return to the Gym After the Pandemic

1. Wear a Mask

Gyms, health clubs, and group exercise classes all contain large numbers of people, often breathing heavily, in relatively small spaces. Given that COVID-19 is primarily spread through the air, masks are an effective tool for preventing transmission

Even if you've been vaccinated, wearing a mask remains a good idea, as researchers are still learning about how long immunity lasts and how effective certain vaccines are against the disease variants. Most people find lightweight masks, like surgical ones, to be comfortable to wear during workouts.

2. Take It Easy

Studies have shown that people all around the world have become less active during the pandemic, mostly as a result of increased time at home and the effects of social isolation. If you're returning to the gym for the first time since the onset of the pandemic, go slow, and don't push your body to do anything it isn't yet prepared to do.

Start with a few days of mild to moderate cardio workouts, leaving a day in between to rest. As you get more comfortable and your body acclimates, increase gym visits and take on gradually more challenging routines.

3. Keep a Distance

Some gyms have spaced-out machines and other exercise equipment so users can maintain a safe distance from one another. Know your gym's rules and honor them. Even if there are no space restrictions, try to choose machines and equipment that are away from other gymgoers—ideally, maintain a six-foot distance, but use your best judgment.
