One of the primary benefits of a health club membership is having access to top-notch group exercise classes. That being said, it’s natural for anyone to be intimidated walking into a new exercise program, such as Pilates, for the first time. If you’re interested in this incredibly popular and effective exercise program geared towards improving overall strength, flexibility, coordination, balance and posture, here’s what you should expect at your first class.

Pilates Reformer Class

Pilates reformer classes are one of the most   effective ways to slim down and tone your body.   Invented by Joseph Pilates, the Reformer is a bed like piece of equipment with a moving carriage.  The carriage is attached to springs that give resistance to the exercises performed.  Exercises on the Reformer are done laying down, sitting or even standing utilizing straps that both the hands and feet can be placed in.

Pilates classes typically range in experience from beginner to advanced, so no need to be intimidated! Let the instructor know it’s your first time, and they’ll introduce you to the equipment and walk you through the basics as the class goes on. Each movement will have a variation based on your skill level and athleticism so you’ll be able to follow along and get a thorough core workout.

What to wear for class:

Leave your gym shoes at home or in the locker room, because footwear isn’t needed in a Pilates Reformer class.  Barefoot or non-slip socks work best.  When it comes to Pilates Reformer classes it is best to avoid any clothing to loose or baggy.  Instead, opt for more form-hugging clothing.  This style of clothing allows your instructor to easily check your form throughout the class.
