When you want to install a new parking lot or driveway on your commercial property, an asphalt paving contractor will have the experience, equipment, and quality materials needed to create a smooth and durable surface. However, they must also follow the correct process to ensure the best results. Here's a brief rundown on the steps the paving team will tackle.

A Brief Guide to Asphalt Paving Installation

1. Demolition

Before focusing on installation, contractors will start by removing existing asphalt, pavers, and hard surfaces. They'll conduct demolition with heavy equipment, complete with hydraulic attachment tools, such as augers and buckets. These machines can break up materials, making them easier to extract and remove from the area.

2. Grading, Sloping & Sub Base

Once old materials have been removed and there's a clean slate, contractors will grade and slope the area. This essential step will help with water drainage, ensuring moisture runs away from buildings on the lot. It'll also minimize the cracking of your pavement due to excess pressure and soil expansion underneath.

Next, a subbase will be laid down. This is generally a layer of crushed gravel that's compacted to protect the asphalt layers above.

3. New Asphalt

Once the subbase is compacted and stable, the paving contractor will install new asphalt. They'll prepare a hot asphalt mix in a dump truck and then transfer it into a paving machine. This laser-guided machine will pass over the parking lot parameters, creating even layers with guidance from your team.

4. Final Smoothing

Once asphalt is laid down in even rows, special vibratory rollers will compact the asphalt mix into a smooth, solid surface. Your contractor will then check along the edges for proper grading. After a drying period of at least three days, you can paint parking stripes and safely drive the new surface.
