A safe parking lot is crucial for the well-being of your customers, employees, guests, and vendors. Not only does parking lot striping improve safety, but it also makes your lot easier to navigate and enhances the curb appeal of your business property. To better understand the striping process and its benefits, here are answers to some of the most frequently asked questions on the subject.

A Guide to Parking Lot Striping

When do I need parking lot striping?

The easiest way to tell if you need striping services is to check your lot for an abundance of fading or worn stripes. Stripes that are no longer clearly marked can lead to a number of issues, from diminished visual appeal to sloppy parking jobs to accidents in your lot. Also, be mindful of the visibility of your striping at night and during inclement weather; if the markings aren't easily identifiable in these lower light conditions, striping is a good idea.

How can I prepare for the process?

Fortunately, the preparation process is quite easy. First and foremost, remove all vehicles from the lot. If you own the building and have tenants, be sure to give them proper notice. Post signage and send emails to your employees and customers to let them know the lot will be out of commission while the striping work is performed. You may want to provide alternative parking arrangements in the interim. Finally, turn off any sprinkler systems that might make your lot wet, as paint cannot be applied to wet asphalt.

How long does it take to dry?

In most cases, the paint is dry in about an hour or so. However, it takes around four hours for the stripes to totally cure. After that, your lot will be drivable again.

Are there any conditions that could delay the process?

Yes. Rain can make it impossible to successfully apply the paint, so if the day is a rainy one, the paving contractor will likely reschedule until the lot is dry. Also, colder temperatures—those below 50 degrees Fahrenheit—can slow the drying and curing times.
