While Apple® devices are created to be strong and durable, age and wear can diminish their ability to perform at a high level. If your MacBook® laptop’s screen is flickering, it can be difficult and frustrating to try and use it. Before bringing it to an Apple specialist for MacBook repairs, however, there are a few steps you can take try and fix the glitch or software malfunction yourself.

3 Steps to Take to Address MacBook Screen Flickering

1. Check for Updates & Graphic Settings Issues

One of the most common causes of all mysterious computer problems deals with updates. If you haven’t installed updates in a while, you can do so by visiting the “System Preferences” option from the Apple menu and clicking “Software Update.” If the problem persists after installing the updates, check whether you have automatic graphics switching activated by going to the “System Preferences” menu and selecting the “Energy Saver” option.

2. Reset the MacBook & the PRAM or NVRAM

If that doesn’t work try restarting the parameter random access memory (RAM) or nonvolatile RAM— memory that your device uses to store important settings and load them quickly. To do this, press and hold the “Option,” “Command,” “P,” and “R” keys for about 20 seconds after you restart the MacBook.

3. Start the MacBook in Safe Mode

Safe mode is a way to restart the MacBook, so it prevents some software from automatically loading. When restarting your device, hold down the “Shift” key and do not release it until after the Apple logo appears. After you log in, you’ll be in safe mode. If the flickering stops, a nonessential function is causing it. If it doesn’t, you may need to schedule MacBook repairs for a hardware problem.
