RAM plays a crucial role in new and used Apple® products. If you’re like many people, computer parts are unfamiliar territory. However, understanding RAM and how to recognize when you need more will ensure you get optimal use from your computer. Here’s what you need to know.

A Quick Guide to RAM

What Is It?

RAM stands for random access memory. It’s not the general memory on your computer’s hard drive or the storage on an external hard drive. Those store long-term data like MP3 files, word documents, and media. RAM handles immediate, temporary storage needs.

used apple productWhen you boot up your computer or open a new program, RAM reads and manages the operation. It loads content in web browsers, helps process computer games, and handles general device functions. If your computer used standard storage instead, it would have to sort through all of your permanently stored files, making it much slower.

There are several types of RAM. DRAM (dynamic random access memory) is the most common in new and used Apple products; VRAM is popular for gaming computers. High-bandwidth RAM offers quick performance; though, it comes with a higher price tag.

When Do You Need More?

The most obvious sign is your computer slowing down. First, run a virus scan and clear unused files from your hard drive to make sure they’re not the issue. Generally, at least 10% of your hard drive should be empty.

Computers will often display a prompt when there isn’t enough RAM for operations. Programs may also be slow to load or operate, and portions of your screen may not display properly. Check to see if these continue for a few days to ensure it’s not a one-off issue.

If problems persist, visit a computer upgrades store. Professionals can check your RAM and then safely install more as needed. Never attempt the job on your own without prior experience. You may damage your computer in the process.
