One of the joys of having a laptop is that you can work anywhere you please, which is particularly useful if you’re a freelancer. This freedom comes with an unfortunate downside, however. When working on public Wi-Fi, you face serious security issues. While you may need computer repairs if you get a virus, there are steps freelancers can take to prevent malware. Here’s what you need to know.

How to Safeguard Your Computer When Working in Public

1. Turn Off File Sharing

File sharing options are useful, but they can also be a security risk when you’re on an unsecured network. Adjust the file-sharing options when working on your computer in public. If you’re a Mac® user, adjust your AirDrop® settings to contacts only

2. Only Keep Your Wi-Fi on When Using It

computer repairWhen your Wi-Fi is on, your computer will automatically link into available networks. As a result, you may connect to an unsecured network without realizing it, which will increase your risk of a security breach. Instead, turn off your Wi-Fi when you don’t need it, and only turn it back on when you’re ready to connect to a secure network.

3. Learn How to Recognize a Secure Network

Only networks that ask for a WPA password are secure. If you’re not prompted to put in a password when connected to public Wi-Fi, you should assume that the network isn’t safe. In this case, change locations, find a more secure network to work from, or use your iPhone® as an internet hotspot.
