A Guide to a Newborn Photography Session

How should you decide what to wear?

The ability to be confident and comfortable during the photo shoot is always a priority. Choose something in a solid and light hue that won’t show lint, but keep it free and flowing so that you can easily shift poses throughout the shoot. If the family session will be in your home, consider coordinating your clothes with your interior design, whether it’s Bohemian chic, modern or traditional.

What should you bring for the baby?

Newborns are most comfortable when they’re being swaddled, as it stimulates the snug, warm environment of the womb. Since their mood is crucial to a successful newborn session, you’ll want to bring a number of swaddling blankets. Choose blankets that are soft and large enough for swaddling, but that also match your outfit.

How else can you make sure the baby is comfortable?

If possible, plan your photo shoot around your baby’s schedule. You’ll want to arrive after they’ve eaten, so you don’t have to interrupt the session for feeding. If you’d like photos of your baby sleeping peacefully, schedule the shoot during their longest nap time. If you’d like more animated photos, try to schedule the shoot in the morning or early afternoon, when they are more likely to be awake.
