Most everyone wants a healthy mouth and gums, and most people know they should brush twice and floss only daily and see their dentist regularly. Flossing is the most effective way to remove food particles and debris that lead to plaque buildup, tooth decay, and gum disease. However, even diligent flossers may not be doing so correctly. Here are a few tips for flossing to ensure it contributes to your oral health.

How to Floss Correctly

1. Before Brushing

While it’s often debated whether you should floss before or after brushing, flossing first has the most beneficial outcomes. Flossing before you brush dislodges food particles from hard-to-reach areas, thus allowing your toothbrush to capture them and clean between teeth more effectively. Following this with a thorough rinse with mouthwash removes most of the oral bacteria present, leaving your teeth and gums cleaner and your breath fresher.

2. Gently

Unless you haven’t flossed before or in a long time, your gums shouldn’t bleed when you clean between your teeth. Ideally, you should floss in a gentle motion, slowly rubbing the floss between each tooth. If bleeding persists after several sessions of flossing, speak to your dentist. This is usually a sign of some underlying dental or medical condition, such as gum disease.

3. Slowly

When done correctly, flossing should take about two to five minutes to complete. If you’re only taking a few seconds to floss, you won’t remove all the debris between your teeth, and your other dental health habits will be less effective as a result. It may take you longer to floss if you’re just starting, but with practice, you should be able to reduce the time needed.
