Your sump pump is an essential piece of equipment that can protect your home from flooding when working properly. Because it is hidden away in the basement and isn't required very often, it's easy for this equipment to fall out of working order without your notice. Know the signs that it's time to replace yours.

When to Replace Your Sump Pump

1. Age

Pumps have an approximate life span of seven years, so replace yours immediately once it reaches this age. If it's more than five or six years old and has broken down, it's often more cost-effective to replace it than pay for a repair that will only buy you another year or two of use.

2. Corrosion

Sometimes, visible rust is the result of corroded battery terminals. However, if the corrosion is not coming from the battery, then it is likely a case of iron bacteria.

This type of bacteria feeds on the iron in the pit's water. As it grows, it creates a gel-like material that clogs up the pump and is impossible to remove. Have the pit treated with bleach to kill the bacteria and replace the pump.

3. Loud Vibration

The impeller is a propeller-like piece of material that sucks the water into the pump. When it sucks up a large piece of debris, this can damage the impeller.

The entire unit is thrown off-balance, which makes it vibrate excessively and loudly while it runs. The bent impeller cannot be re-bent into just the right position to perfectly balance the unit, so the pump will need to be replaced.
