While losing weight can be both a goal and byproduct of pursuing an exercise regimen, it’s certainly not the only way to measure physical wellness. Whether you’re taking classes at a local fitness center, running laps in a park, or following workout videos, there are many different metrics you can use to ascertain how your efforts are paying off. Here are a few to consider.

How Can You Track Progress Towards Your Fitness Goals?

1. Measurements

Watching the number on the scale can be frustrating. Weight can fluctuate based on how much water you’re drinking and how much muscle mass you’re gaining, for instance. For this reason, many people take measurements of their waist, hips, chest, arms, and legs instead to see how their body is transforming. Use your initial measurements as a baseline and record your progress weekly.

2. Clothing Fit

If you prefer not to focus on any measurements, consider using the way your clothing fits to see how your body is changing. Choose a pair of pants that aren’t stretchy, such as jeans, and note how comfortable they are with time. Keep in mind that while they may grow looser in some areas, such as the waist, other places, like the glutes or thighs, could become tighter if you gain muscle.

3. Performance Indicators

Some people pursue exercise journeys to accomplish specific sports goals. You might try to slash your mileage time, whether on foot or a bicycle. For strength training, work up towards heavier weights or more reps. If you enjoy classes, start out with one or two days a week at the fitness center, and gradually increase your frequency until you’re going most days.

4. Journaling

Exercise can have mood-boosting benefits, including a decreased risk of depression. Track how your mental and emotional health change over time by keeping a journal. 

5. Photo Evidence

Visual thinkers may be best-suited to photo tracking their fitness journeys. Consider setting up an Instagram® account to post progress shots. You can also add glimpses into your routine by videoing the healthy meals you are making or your workout and displaying them using the "stories" feature.
