As you age, daily exercise becomes even more important. Even if you can’t run marathons anymore, routine activity helps your body stay in shape and boosts your mental health as well. As an added bonus, it’s the perfect way to socialize in a senior living facility. If you’ve never been a regular gym-goer, though, developing a daily regimen can be daunting. Here’s why exercise is more important than ever—and how you can motivate yourself to get started.

Why Exercise Is Important

Whether you’ve been active your whole life or are looking to make some healthy changes, regular daily exercise can help you prevent many health issues, from high blood pressure to joint problems. Of course, before starting any exercise regimen, it’s important to get the go-ahead from your doctor first. They may have recommendations for you based on any existing health issues you have.

However, no matter your ability level, doing some easy-to-moderate exercise every day keeps your body and mind active, leading to less physical pain and stiffness while boosting your mood and mental clarity. Check with your senior living facility to see what exercise options they offer.

How to Get Started

Aerobic Exercises

senior livingDoing some sort of moderate aerobic exercises, such as walking, swimming, or using the treadmill, is recommended at least five days a week. You want to move enough to raise your heart rate for at least 30 minutes a day. Easy walking often doesn’t raise your heart rate, so invest in a heart rate monitor for best results.

Strength Training

At least two days a week, work out your major muscles groups with resistance training. This can be done with machines at the gym, free weights, or resistance bands. Strength training not only prevents loss of muscle mass, but it also helps maintain bone density as you get older.

Flexibility Exercises

At least two days a week, take 10 minutes to stretch out your major muscle groups. Yoga or tai chi are both great group activities that help you stretch and work on your flexibility and balance. Many senior living facilities offer easy group stretching or morning tai chi.
