Dressers can become overstuffed seemingly overnight, causing problems such as wrinkled clothes and missing socks. Too many clothes packed in also puts undue stress on the furniture itself and can eventually cause nailed or glued sections to separate. If you’re tired of feeling frustrated every time you open a drawer, use the following tips to organize the space and keep it that way.

How to Tame Your Dresser

1. Sort Everything

Remove the contents of each drawer for serious sorting. Think critically about whether you’ve worn assorted items lately and whether you plan to wear them soon. Get rid of anything you don’t feel comfortable in or simply don’t like anymore, and toss items that are faded, stained, or worn-looking, too. Donate what you can to friends, family, and local consignment or charity stores.

2. Create Categories

Assign categories to each drawer for easy retrieval. If you’re working with three drawers, for example, the bottom drawer could be for jeans, shorts, and leggings, while the middle drawer holds tank tops and T-shirts. The top drawer can then hold underwear, socks, and PJs.

dresserNo matter how you want to categorize the drawers, always put the right items back in the correct space. Use dividers to keep smaller things in the right sections, such as socks, underwear, and bras.

3. Roll What You Can

Roll certain clothes to create more space and avoid overstuffing issues. Leggings, tights, camisoles, ties, synthetic tops, and tank tops all roll easily. If dresser drawers hold T-shirts, learn to fold them for filing purposes to save even more space. Create T-shirt squares by placing the garments face down and folding them in thirds, then in half so that you bring the bottom side up. Fold each shirt one more time from the bottom up.

4. Hang Bulky Items

Refrain from putting bulky garments back in the dresser, such as sweaters, sweatshirts, and long-sleeved T-shirts. Hang these items in the closet instead. If you lack closet space, consider purchasing a garment rack for bulky seasonal items in a well-ventilated attic or a basement near a dehumidifier.
