If you're planning a Botox® appointment soon, you'll naturally want the wrinkle-softening injections to last as long as possible. The anti-aging injectable typically holds for three to four months, though it can remain in your face for up to six months with the right care. Here are some fundamental ways to maximize the procedure and keep your face looking fresh and fabulous.

How to Maintain Your Botox Effects

1. Stay Upright for 4 Hours

Lying down and bending can cause Botox to disperse, which reduces its effect on lines and wrinkles. It also increases the risk of site bruising from heightened blood flow to the affected areas. For this reason, standing and sitting upright after getting injections for a minimum of four hours is recommended to keep the anti-aging product in place.

2. Don’t Rub Your Face

Pressure on the face in the hours after treatment can cause migration issues, as does applying makeup. For the best results, refrain from touching your face for three days and avoid makeup for the same amount of time.

If you must wear makeup, apply products using dabbing rather than rubbing motions. Avoid everything else that puts pressure on your face and increases migration risks, such as sleeping on your side or stomach the day of your treatment and getting facials in the weeks after.

3. Wait 12 to 24 Hours to Exercise

Vigorous exercise can also cause the injectable to migrate, so wait at least 12 hours to work out. Waiting 24 hours is even better because it gives the Botox time to settle in the correct areas. To speed up this process, perform facial exercises after your session, including repeatedly smiling, frowning, and raising your eyebrows.

4. Use Sun Protection

Heat from the sun flushes your skin and increases blood circulation, two issues that increase the risk of injection site bruising. That's why it's best to avoid the sun for four hours post-treatment and apply sunblock before going outside after that initial period. It helps to wear sunglasses and a broad-brimmed hat as well, as these sun protection tactics preserve the injectables by helping prevent new wrinkles.
