3 Steps to Take if You Suspect a Propane Gas Leak
Propane is naturally odorless, but the gas includes additives that typically give it a rotten egg or skunk spray smell when it leaks. The odor alerts homeowners so that they can take the proper precautions in the event of a leak. Use this guide to stay safe if you ever suspect a propane gas leak in your home.
A Guide to Dealing With a Propane Leak
1. Put Out Anything That’s Lit
Put out all open flames, such as candles and the stovetop, immediately if you smell the gas or hear hissing sounds indicating a tank leak. Also, put out and turn off anything that can cause a spark, such as a lit incense stick, lights, and plugged-in appliances and electronics. Even a slight spark can cause an explosion that results in serious injuries and property damage, including fire and soot damage that decrease indoor air quality.
2. Vacate the House
Instruct family members to leave the house as soon as you detect a leak. Have them wait outside at a designated area away from your home while you finish putting out anything flammable or combustible. Once you have exited your house, shut off the tank's gas valve by turning the knob to the right, assuming the tank is above ground.
Whether the tank is above or below ground, it should be at least 10 feet away from your house for safety purposes. By shutting off the valve, you’ll prevent more gas from leaking and intensifying the risks of injury and property damage.
3. Report the Leak
After closing the gas valve, keep away from the tank and call 911 or your propane delivery company to report the leak. Wait for licensed technicians to arrive and safely identify and repair the leak's source. If the tank is older and has sustained severe corrosion, the technicians will dispose of it at the local hazardous waste site. They will also test all gas-using appliances in your home in case one is responsible for the leak.
