4 Steps for Hooking Up Your Grill to a Propane Tank
Many grills across the country are powered by propane gas. While charcoal has its advantages, gas is convenient, clean, and affordable. Before you can reap the benefits of cooking with gas, though, you're going to have to connect your grill to the propane tank. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you connect to the gas safely.
How to Connect Your Grill to a Propane Tank
1. Position the Grill
Place the grill a safe distance—at least 3 feet on all sides—from any structures on your property. Open the lid so gas cannot build up inside the space, and confirm that the knob that controls the temperature is in the "off" position. If there's an empty tank hooked up to the grill, you can also remove it now.
2. Prepare the Tank
The propane tank should have a red or blue cap over the nozzle. Remove this cap, but only if you're ready to proceed right away. If you remove it and then get caught up with something else, the gas could start leaking out and pose a safety risk.
3. Connect the Hose
Find the grill's gas line; it should look like a long black or translucent tube. Then, you can connect the gas line to the nozzle on the tank. Secure the attachment, but don't screw it in so much that it will be difficult to remove when it's time to replace the tank with a new one. Finish by tightening the coupler, which is the small, disc-shaped piece of hardware on the front of the tank.
4. Open the Valve
There should be a valve on the top of the tank that keeps the gas from leaking while the tank is in storage. Flip this valve until it's in the open position. Now you're ready to grill some burgers or shish kabobs. Just make sure to pop the valve back into the closed position before disconnecting the tank from the grill so that flammable gas doesn't escape.
