Rear-end collisions are some of the most common vehicle accidents, and they are almost always avoidable. Although the driver who hits another vehicle behind is usually responsible for the crash, that doesn't mean you can't drive defensively to avoid being hit. Even a slow-speed collision can cause damage that can put your vehicle in the auto body shop and cause injuries, so remember these tips to help prevent an accident.

How to Keep Your Car Out of the Auto Body Shop

1. Use Your Signals

Any time you're making a turn or merging, use your turn signals to alert the driver behind you of your intention. Suddenly slowing or stopping to make a turn doesn't give other drivers time to stop, increasing the likelihood of a crash. A good rule of thumb is to turn on your signal at least 50 feet before you intend to turn.

2. Gradually Slow Down When Needed

Whether you are slowing down for a red light or traffic, give yourself plenty of time to slow down. Gradually apply your brakes as you approach the stop, rather than waiting until the last second. This gives the driver behind you time to slow down as well, instead of suddenly crashing into your vehicle.

3. Maintain an Escape Route

When you come upon stopped traffic, leave space between your car and the one in front of you. If the vehicle behind you doesn't stop in time, you have options to avoid being hit and are less likely to be pushed into the car in front of you. Always watch your mirrors when stopped and be prepared to quickly steer out of the way onto the side of the road. Be mindful of giving yourself an escape route whenever you stop if another driver is distracted.

4. Check Your Brake Lights

Working brake lights are crucial for preventing rear-end collisions, so confirm that they are working. Police can stop you for nonworking brake or taillights, so pay close attention and replace the bulbs when necessary. It's also important to make sure your mirrors are all intact and positioned properly to see what's happening around you while driving.
