3 Reasons Children May Have Poor Dental Health
Cavities, or tooth decay, usually indicate that a child needs to work on their dental hygiene. However, before this condition leads to serious infections, it's important to know why your child is more prone to cavities and how to combat this issue. Here are the following causes and what you should do about them.
Why Children May Have Poor Oral Health
1. Unhealthy Diet
Children tend to love snacks that contain excessive amounts of sucrose. This sweetening agent interacts with bacteria to produce acid that results in cavities. Try replacing sweet snacks with high-water content fruits and vegetables such as pears, melons, and cucumbers.
If they are not fond of this food group, serve cheese snacks to help the saliva flow and wash away food particles from the teeth. Although these alternatives are healthier, children may find these foods unappealing. If eliminating sugary snacks is a hard sell, try limiting these snacks to just once a day.
2. Poor Oral Hygiene
Proper oral hygiene prevents bacteria buildup and improves oral health. As a result, children with improper oral hygiene may develop cavities and other infections.
Start teaching your kids proper oral hygiene by using fluoride toothpaste to protect their teeth from acid-producing bacteria. In addition, encourage flossing to remove particles between their teeth. Make brushing fun by letting them pick out their toothbrush and toothpaste, and play their favorite song so they brush for at least two minutes.
3. Inconsistent Visits
Regular dental visits are crucial for a child's oral health. Schedule a dental visit after your child turns one, or six months after their first tooth appears. Additionally, regular dental checkups can determine if your child is developing dental problems at an early stage. Take your child to the dentist at least twice a year for cleanings and professional fluoride treatments.
