Having a baby is a beautiful milestone, one that comes along with a lot of parenting decisions, mishaps, and learning opportunities. A child's oral hygiene is crucial to the rest of their physical health, which is why it's paramount to stay diligent as they continue to grow and develop. However, some mistakes do happen, but with the proper knowledge, others can be avoided. Baby bottle syndrome is a common pediatric dental issue, one that can cause bacteria, cavities, and tooth decay. Here's a helpful guide to learn more about the syndrome, what the risks are, and how to avoid it.

What Is It?

Babies are often soothed by sucking on their bottles, in the same way they would breast-feed. This process can lull them to sleep, and while slumber is often the goal for our little ones, it can be risky to allow them to sleep while feeding. The formula or milk from the top of the bottle can pool behind the front two teeth, which can lead to oral hygiene-related problems.

What Are the Risks?

If this liquid is able to sit inside a baby's mouth for hours while they sleep, then the bacteria has nowhere to go. Instead, it will build up, causing cavities and enamel erosion.

Many parents might shrug at this possibility, saying that they'll just lose their baby teeth anyway. However, bacteria can also impact the gums, which continue to grow and develop with your child. Additionally, tooth decay can be painful, so the teething process will be even more uncomfortable for your baby.

How Can You Avoid It?

Try to have your child use a pacifier instead of a bottle, but if that's not possible, inserting water rather than milk or formula can help avoid bacteria buildup. Your baby's oral hygiene also depends on routine visits to the dentist and daily brushing as soon as their teeth begin to break through the gums. This type of care will help ensure that bacteria doesn't erode too much of the enamel before it's cleaned up and washed away.
