Before playing a sport at the park or working out in the gym, athletes need to spend time stretching. In addition to reducing the risk of injury, stretching for 5 to 10 minutes prior to a workout can boost performance on the field or court. Read below to learn more about the benefits of this healthy warm-up routine.

Increase Range of Motion

Repetitive movements in sports can cause the muscles to tighten, leading to a decreased range of motion. Limited range of motion can lead to pain, injury, and reduced performance. Stretching increases an athlete’s range of motion around joints, allowing them to move easier and use each muscle to its full potential.

Reduce Injuries

Athletes who stretch properly will be less prone to injury. When muscles are warmed up and stretched, movement is easier and more fluid. Stretching also reduces pressure on an athlete’s back and joints, which prevents injuries and accelerates recovery of the joints, tendons, and muscles.

Decrease Stress

Stretching before playing a sport also has euphoric effects that can minimize stress. Stretching refreshes the blood flow throughout the body, leaving athletes with a peaceful mindset. In addition, many individuals carry stress in their muscles. Stretching can relieve this tension, leading to a better performance on the field.

What Stretches Should Athletes Perform?

Before practicing or playing a game at the park, athletes should perform the following stretches, holding each for at least 20 to 30 seconds to lengthen the muscle.

Triceps Stretch

Position one arm over your head and grab that elbow with your other hand. Then, pull your elbow back toward your head.

Sitting Hamstring Stretch

Sit on the ground and stretch your legs in front of you. Bend one leg. Slowly lean forward toward the foot of the straight leg.

Leg Over Stretch

Lie down on your back and put your legs in front of you. Lift one leg into the air and then put it across your body so that it lays on the ground.
