Your semi's exhaust system carries toxic gases away from the vehicle, minimizes noise, and improves engine and fuel performance. Given that this system is underneath your rig, a leak can easily get overlooked, but prompt repairs are always needed to prevent further issues. Here are three common signs of exhaust leaks in semi-trucks.

How to Tell if Your Semi's Exhaust System Is Leaking

1. Increased Engine Noise

Semis have extremely large engines that naturally generate a lot of noise. Larger-volume engines produce more exhaust, which deepens the sound and increases the volume. The exhaust system contains components that either absorb sound waves or cancel them out with reflected waves from the same source. When there is a leak somewhere in the system, it will be less efficient at noise reduction. If you hear loud rumbles, pops, or hisses when the engine is running or when you're accelerating, the problem could be a leak.

2. Reduced Fuel Efficiency

A leak can affect the pressure within the system, which causes the vehicle to consume more fuel as it tries to expel gases. As a result, you will notice a decrease in fuel efficiency, especially if the leak is close to the engine. Take note of how often you're filling up with gas. If there's been a marked increase, an exhaust leak could be the reason.

3. A Gas Smell

Of all the system's functions, the most important is its role in routing dangerous gases away from your truck. This ensures that toxic fumes do not make their way back to the vehicle.

If a leak is present, gases may seep out and escape into other parts of the truck. A pronounced gasoline odor will be noticeable in this situation. And while this isn't good for your rig, it's also not good for your health, and repairs should be a priority.
