In the trucking industry, safety is always the highest priority. Each season presents its own distinct challenges, so it's important for drivers to consider the time of year and adjust their driving habits as needed to meet the conditions of the road and environment. Staying on top of routine auto maintenance is a good first step; here are a few additional ones for safe driving this fall.

A Commercial Trucker's Guide to Safe Fall Driving

1. Turn on Your Headlights

Fall means shorter days and longer nights. And with fewer hours of daylight, you'll need to rely on your headlights more often to effectively see the road and be seen by other vehicles. Make sure your lights are on from sunset to sunrise and during rain and other inclement fall weather. Before heading out, confirm that your headlights are fully functional; if they aren't, have an auto maintenance professional repair or replace them as needed.

2. Be Mindful of Wildlife

Wildlife activity typically increases during the fall season. Deer, elk, moose, and bears are just a few animals you can expect to see more of in the months ahead. To prevent accidents, stay alert at all times and routinely scan the sides of the road for wildlife, especially during twilight hours when many animals tend to be more active. If you see an animal, slow down, but do not swerve your truck, as this could result in a rollover.

3. Prepare for Weather Changes

The weather can change on a dime throughout the fall, so both you and your truck need to be ready for everything from wind and fog to rain and snow. Reduce speed on wet roads and in snowy conditions; use low beams in the fog and snow; and have your windshield wipers checked by an auto maintenance professional and the blades replaced as needed to ensure dependable operation. Remember to tune into local radio stations to be informed of any severe weather predictions.
