Asphalt is the most popular roofing material used in the United States, as it works well for homes in all climates. Homeowners love its affordability, versatility, beautiful style, and durability. There are a few popular types of asphalt shingles to consider for your new roof or roof replacement.

A Guide to Asphalt Shingle Types

1. Dimensional

Also known as laminate or architectural shingles, these offer a longer lifespan of approximately 25 to 30 years. They are made with two or more layers of asphalt, which are fused together for extreme durability in even rough and windy weather conditions. The multiple layers also offer a more attractive and high-end appearance on pricier homes since the shingles have some depth and visual variation to them.

2. 3-Tab

They are lightweight for quick installation and easy repairs, and they come in a few color options to match your home’s style. These shingles usually last up to 20 years, and while they can sometimes blow-off in extremely windy conditions, they’re able to handle other extreme weather.

3. Luxury

Also known as premium asphalt shingles, these are the most high-end asphalt option. They closely mimic the appearance of cedar shake and slate roofs at a fraction of the cost and installation time. This copycat look is achieved by changing the asphalt’s colors and textures to match the way the light hits and reflects off of these other materials.

The slate-look option looks best on early 20th-century architecture, such as Tudor and English houses. The cedar shake looks especially beautiful on Georgian and Dutch Colonial homes.

The multiple layers give luxury shingles a hefty weight, so they will withstand weathering while offering highly-effective protection from the elements. However, they’re not as heavy as slate or tile, meaning they can be installed relatively quickly on any type of roof. Luxury shingles will typically last more than 30 years.
