During the summer, taking the boat out onto the water is a great way to cool off and enjoy a warm afternoon. However, boating can be just as exhilarating during the winter, especially if you love to explore the shoreline or like to fish from your boat while the lake isn't frozen. However, when the weather is cold, you may need to pack extra boating equipment or take a few extra steps before getting out onto the water. Here are a few tips for boating during the wintertime.

How Should You Prepare for Boating in the Winter?

1. Dress Appropriately

Weather conditions can change drastically in a few minutes during the wintertime, which is why wearing the right clothing is so important. Dress in layers when you go boating during the winter, with a moisture-wicking base layer, middle layers with loft or insulation, and water-repellant top layers. Some performance fabrics are woven tightly enough to allow water to bead off, and others are finished with a hydrophobic (water-repellant) coating.

Merino wool outerwear is a great option since wool retains warmth even when it becomes wet. Merino wool specifically contains natural sources of lanolin, which is a water repellant. By dressing in layers, you can easily add or remove clothes to stay comfortable. Bring extra clothing and blankets in case anyone in your party isn't adequately prepared for the weather.

2. Over-Prepare

While you may be used to stocking your vessel with boating equipment before you head out, taking extra time to over-prepare is helpful when you may be exposed to uncomfortable winter weather. Since some fuel docks may be closed for the winter, gas up before you head out, and stock your boat with life jackets, handheld radios, and even extra food and drinks. Check onboard electronics, like radios and flashlights, and always pack extra batteries in your boating equipment stash.

3. File a Float Plan

While it doesn't need to be a formal affair, letting someone know where you are going and what you plan to do can be beneficial if you run into trouble. Reach out to a friend or family member who you talk to routinely, and let them know when you are leaving, where you plan to dock, and how long you are thinking about being out on the water. Tell them that you will call them when you get home, and ask that they contact the authorities if you don't reach out. Float plans create a trigger for sending emergency help, just in case you experience boat trouble.
