Whether you're taking the boat out for a day of quiet solo fishing or for a fun time with family and friends, good safety practices protect everyone aboard and help prevent dangerous boating accidents. From life jackets to proper boating etiquette, there are a number of ways you can safely enjoy a day on the boat. Here's what to know before you get out on the water.

Do:

life jackets

Wear sunscreen.

Even if you're shielded directly from the sun, light can still bounce off the water and cause skin damage. Whenever you're on the water, wear sunscreen.

Ensure you have enough life jackets.

Before going out on the water, confirm the location, condition, and number of life vests on board. Under Ohio law, boats are required to carry a Coast-Guard-approved life jacket or Personal Flotation Device (PFD) for each passenger on board, and if there are children on board, be sure you have vests that are a proper fit for them.

Check that the boat is fully off and the engine is up before going for a swim.

Inform all passengers to remain clear of the propeller. Don't let anyone in the water until the engine and propeller have completely stopped and been pulled up.

Don't:

Let inexperienced or unlicensed passengers drive.

A boat, large or small, is a sophisticated piece of machinery. Only trusted, experienced people should operate it to prevent accidents or injuries. To protect both your boat and its passengers, restrict who you allow to take the wheel.

Drink and drive.

Drinking and boating do not mix. Alcohol is one of the largest contributing factors to boating accidents. If you're planning on drinking, choose a designated driver—another licensed passenger—to take control.

Have too many people or items on the boat.

Overloading a boat with either too many people or too many heavy items can lead to sinking, capsizing, and other accidents. Extra passengers can also become a dangerous distraction for the driver. Keep an eye on your boat's maximum weight limit, even if that means limiting the number of passengers aboard.
