Before removing a boat from long-term storage, it's critical to have it fully inspected to ensure a trouble-free season on the water. Neglecting to have boat repairs made, despite indicators of danger, can only result in larger, more expensive headaches down the line. Here are a few signs to look for that indicate you need boat repairs.

5 Signs You Need Boat Repairs

1. Overheating Engine

If a component of the cooling system fails, the engine may overheat, resulting in component failure or a fire.  An overheating engine can be caused by a blockage of debris, a defective thermostat or belt, a fractured hose, a loose clamp, a damaged impeller, or low coolant level in a closed system.  So it's best to have a boat repair technician determine the root of the problem if you're not sure what to do.

2. Steering Issues

At times, you might have difficulty maneuvering your boat or the steering wheel may get stuck. If adding hydraulic fluid does not solve the problem for a hydraulic steering system, there is likely an underlying issue that requires professional care. Problems could be caused by hydraulic line breaks, a shortage of lubrication, corroded steering cables, or contamination of the support tube.

3. Partial or Complete Loss of Power

Your boat should quickly accelerate whenever you throttle it. However, if nothing happens or it appears to sputter, the issue may be more than just your boat running on empty. A boat repair expert will check if the possible causes of power loss are dirty filters, a failing spark plug, a prop issue, or a faulty electrical system.

4. Water Leaks Inside the Boat

While getting water in your boat is fairly common, if the amount appears to be more than usual and continues to increase, have the issue checked for your safety. There may be a crack or hole in the hull, defective or loose hull fittings, or the bellows could be leaking.  If left unaddressed, it can sink your boat.

5. Excessive Vibrations

When your boat is running, some vibration is to be expected. However, be cautious if the sensation becomes stronger as you accelerate. Given the difficulty of diagnosing the source of the problem, have a repair professional examine it; the gimbal bearing or u-joint may need to be replaced, there could be an alignment issue, or there may be a damaged or deformed blade in the propeller causing the excessive shaking.
