Dealing with musculoskeletal issues can result in daily challenges, frustrations, and pain. From injuries and traumas to degenerative diseases, orthopedic surgeons can offer hope through specialty treatments, like surgery. Here’s a closer look at some of the most common procedures.

What Are Some Common Orthopedic Surgeries?

1. Knee Replacement

Joint cartilage damage/wear in one or both knees can limit mobility and create swelling and progressive pain. When it is severe enough, part or all of the knee joint can be replaced with artificial material, like surgical metal and plastic, to restore movement and eliminate inflammation. The healing process takes 2 to 3 months with physical therapy usually recommended until full motion and weight is achieved.

Replacement surgery is common for other joints prone to damage from repetitive movement and trauma. Shoulder and hip replacements are also regular procedures completed by orthopedic surgeons.

2. ACL Reconstruction

The anterior cruciate ligament, or ACL, runs in the center of the knee and provides stability during rotation and cutting activities. As such, it’s one of the most common ligaments injured during physical activity and sports. During ACL reconstruction surgery, material is typically grafted from a tendon in the leg and used to replace the damaged segment.

While it’s usually an outpatient procedure, healing time can take a number of months, requiring the use of crutches or bracing for many weeks. Returning to sports or heavy exercise can take a few months to a year, depending on the consistency of rehabilitation and extent of the damage.

3. Joint Arthroscopy

For some shoulder injuries, replacement of the joint isn’t required, such as rotator cuff tears. Instead, the surgeon can make repairs using a small camera and instruments. As a result, shoulder arthroscopy requires very small incisions, resulting in limited scarring and less healing time. Knee arthroscopy is also common procedure and allows treatment for meniscal and ligament tears with minimal blood loss and quicker return to activities.
