A Guide to Green Infrastructure & Porous Pavement
Green infrastructure is the practice of using permeable surfaces on your property to manage the surface water and create a healthier environment. This is an important site development practice for all sizes and types of projects. You can have your contractor use porous pavement to achieve green infrastructure.
What Is It?
Porous asphalt uses a less finely crushed aggregate filler than most pavements. This allows water to trickle down through the pavement and into a stone bed below.
As the water moves through the stone bed, it is naturally filtered before it is released back into the ground. The stone bed beneath the surface is designed to ensure the water level underground never gets high enough to rise into the asphalt itself, which would damage the surface.
What Are the Benefits?
Surface runoff has a lot of dangerous contaminants in it, such as bacteria, heavy metal, chemicals, fertilizer, and other urban pollutants. When it stays on the surface, it can contaminate water sources.
The porous pavement keeps the water from funneling into water sources; it filters the water with natural processes, so all those contaminants are gone by the time it is released back into the environment.
The pavement also stops water from flooding across the surface, which could make the pavement dangerous to drive on or destroy your landscape through erosion. It is easy to install and can easily last up to twenty years before it begins to show any signs of wear. It is a little courser than normal asphalt, but it is still smooth enough to be attractive, comfortable, and meet ADA requirements.
