Vehicles won’t last forever, and eventually, you may find that you need to get rid of one that’s occupying valuable space on your property. If it’s a junk car, it’s no longer safe to use, but you may be able to scrap it and receive some cash in return. As you prepare to get rid of it, keep a few of these basic do's and don’ts in mind.

Do:

Sell as is.

You don't have to do anything special to a junk car, such as performing repairs or detailing the exterior, especially if you're selling it to a salvage yard. They'll simply offer the best possible rate to you, no matter its condition. Any parts that are in salvageable condition can then be sold and put to good future use.

Obtain the title.

No matter what you plan to do, you need to have the vehicle’s title when you pass your junk car onto someone else. This is true whether you’re selling privately or taking it to a salvage yard for cash. Never sell if the junk yard doesn’t actually request the title, as this is key to actually transferring ownership, so you’re no longer held liable for anything that happens with it.

Don’t:

Forget the plates.

It’s easy to forget the license plates in the process of getting rid of the car. However, by law, you must return them to your local Department of Motor Vehicles when you transfer ownership of the car to another party. Do so before you cancel the registration and insurance policy on the vehicle.

Keep the insurance.

Another step many people forget is canceling the insurance policy on the junk car. While you always need to keep a policy on a vehicle so long as it’s in your possession, that no longer holds true once the title is transferred. Provide your policy holder with the date of the sale, and be sure to cancel only after you’ve actually handed over the keys to the buyer.
